La Cañada Crime: Diamond, gold and pearl jewelry stolen in home burglary

July 31

Grand theft: 400 block of Foothill Boulevard. A man reported losing his wallet in a local restaurant at about 9:45 a.m. and believes he was a pickpocket victim.

Aug. 1

Computer crime: 5100 block of La Cañada Boulevard. A man called deputies at 8 a.m. to report an unauthorized digital transfer of funds from his bank account to another account.

Aug. 1

Vehicle burglary: 1900 block of Verdugo Boulevard. A man reported the third-row seat of his Chevy Tahoe stolen after it was broken into while parked between 7:40 and 9:55 p.m. at the United Artists Theatre lot.

Aug. 5

Residential burglary: 4300 block of Oak Drive. A woman left her home at 10 a.m. and returned at 2 p.m. to find the house ransacked and a window screen at the rear of the house cut open. A gold and diamond watch, several gold and diamond rings, two pairs of gold and diamond earrings and a pearl necklace and matching earrings set were reported stolen.

July 31

Identity theft: 2900 block of Hopeton Road. A woman reported receiving a bill from the IRS for taxes due from wages she did not earn. She believes an unknown person fraudulently provided her personal information to an employer.

Aug. 1

Drug possession for sale: 2500 block of Foothill Boulevard. Deputies on patrol spotted three cars leaving “a known drug location” on El Moreno Street just before 2 a.m. and pulled over one of the cars near Foothill and Briggs Avenue after the driver failed to come to a complete stop. The driver, 20-year-old Robert Hempel of Glendale, appeared to be under the influence and was arrested after deputies located bottles of vicodin in the car. Hempel told deputies the pills were to treat a medical condition and that he does not sell them, according to a Sheriff’s crime report.

Aug. 1 - 3

Petty theft: 3800 block of Park Place. A woman reported cash and CDs stolen from her car, which may have been unlocked, while parked in an apartment complex carport between 1 p.m. on Aug. 1 and 12:10 p.m. on Aug. 3.

Aug. 5

Possession of a loaded, concealed firearm and marijuana: 2400 block of Foothill Boulevard. A deputy stopped a car at 7:52 p.m. after the driver failed to signal while turning onto Foothill from a shopping center and smelled the odor of marijuana during the traffic stop. The driver, 50-year-old Ricardo Edmund Lengua of La Cañada Flintridge, said he had a prescription for medical marijuana and a small amount of the drug in the car. Lengua was arrested after a search of the car also turned up a loaded semi-automatic 9 mm Glock 17 pistol. Lengua told deputies he used the firearm for personal protection, according to a Sheriff’s crime report.
