Schiff nominates six La Cañadans for service

Six local students are among 14 nominated this month by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) for appointments to U.S. service academies for the class of 2018.

“Each one of these students has compiled an outstanding resume of accomplishments, excelled in extracurricular activities and sports and demonstrated excellence in academics,” Schiff stated in a news release announcing the nominations. He went on to say he is “confident they will be among the future leaders of our country.”

The locals nominated include Shane Michael Bell of Sun Valley, a student at La Cañada High School who was nominated to attend the Merchant Marine Academy; Ricardo Antonio Francia, III, also of Sun Valley, who studies at St. Francis High School, nominated for the Air Force Academy; Joseph Chance Mahler, a Flintridge Prep student who lives in Hollywood Hills, nominated to both the Naval and Merchant Marine academies; Aaron Jeffrey Mellstrom, a La Cañadan who attends La Cañada High School and was nominated to the Military and Air Force academies; Collin Spenser Ramani, a La Cañada Flintridge resident who attends Loyola High School, nominated to the Naval Academy and Henry Keebo Sim of La Cañada Flintridge, a student at Crescenta Valley High School, nominated to the Military Academy.
