Time to ditch the status quo

I have been a close observer of our district for many years as a parent, president of the Educational Foundation and trustee for its endowment, participant on the superintendent’s Budget Advisory Committee, and even as a student (albeit many years ago). I consider all the members of the school board to be personal friends and I have great respect and appreciation for their commitment and accomplishments, and have given a lot of thought to who would complement them.

For many reasons, I believe that AJ Blumenfeld can add tremendous value to this team. First, all the research on board effectiveness suggests that boards deliver better results when they have a diverse make-up and thus diversity of thought. I believe that Blumenfeld’s youthful perspective will greatly add to the mix.

Second, I believe that we can no longer support the status quo when it comes to teacher evaluation and compensation. We must find a way to better identify and reward our best teachers and to more effectively manage those who are not meeting expectations.

Like many of you, I was skeptical that Blumenfeld could handle this while attending Princeton. But having known Blumenfeld for several years, and having spoken to him about this particular issue at length, I believe that it is a manageable issue and worth the trade-off of adding a unique perspective on the board. I urge you to vote for AJ Blumenfeld on Nov. 8.
