Schools are still safe places for children

Share

Regarding the front page article, “District aims to boost security,” Jan. 10, I am reminded of the frequently heard airline cabin announcement on arrival of a flight, “Welcome to Los Angeles. The safest part of your journey is now over; drive safely.”

That message is as true for going to school as it is for flying: more children (and their parents) are killed or injured in car accidents going to and from school than are involved in mass killings in schools. Let’s not get all wrought up over what turns out to be a minuscule risk. Like the airplane announcement, the safest part of a child’s day is the time spent in school.
