Letter: Conservancy grade is inaccurate

Share

The Los Angeles Times recently published a story, “Most L.A. County cities failing to protect historic sites, study says,” about a Preservation Report Card issued by the Los Angeles Conservancy. In it, the writer reports that La Cañada Flintridge was one of several cities to receive a failing grade. I think the Conservancy and the story’s writer should have done more research.

I want La Cañada residents to know the city has spent significant monies, about half a million dollars, to restore and maintain our most precious historic facility, Lanterman House. And the city has waived fees and cooperated with Descanso Gardens to preserve the county-owned Boddy House. Last year we approved the Mills Act, a special state program which reduces taxes on historic properties to give owners an incentive to preserve and upgrade these properties. The city has a partial list of properties that qualify for the Mills Act.

The story, based on the Conservancy’s report, was off the mark. I want your readers to know that.
