Local soccer team places second in tournament
The Los Angeles Futbol Club Cosmos boys' 19-and-under Black West team, coached by Barry Ritson, placed second in the North-South Coast Soccer League Premier Playoffs during the weekend.
Ritson is also La Cañada High boys' varsity soccer coach
The Cosmos played in three games in a two-day span. They tied Santa Clara Sporting 92, 3-3, in their first game of the tournament. The Cosmos then defeated Santa Clara Sporting 93 in their second game, 1-0, thanks to La Cañada resident Matt Cannata's lone goal.
The win advanced the Cosmos to the championship game of the tournament, where they squared off against United Futbol Club Black and fell, 5-1, to finish in second place.
Cannata is one of four members on the team from La Cañada. Arash Mahboubi and Cameron Meeker both go to La Cañada, along with Cannata. Peter Chodas, a Flintridge Prep student, is another La Cañada resident who plays for the Cosmos.
Gladiators teams' playoff run ends
Both the Junior Midgets and the Midgets of the La Cañada Gladiators program lost their second-round playoff games last weekend. The Junior Midgets fell to Boyle Heights, 30-0, on Saturday at St. Paul High and the Midgets lost to Whittier, 36-35, in a tough battle in Covina.
Green Sharks grace UCLA's field
The Green Sharks, an AYSO boys' Under-7 team from La Cañada, was invited to scrimmage on the field during halftime at the UCLA against California men's soccer game.
The scrimmage, played at UCLA's Drake Stadium in front of a crowd of more than 1,500 fans. It was the highlight of the day for the young athletes, following a pizza lunch and a campus tour. The exciting and well-balanced scrimmage ended in a scoreless tie.
