La Cañada swim teams clinch league

Boys’ and girls’ squads get titles

The La Cañada High boys’ and girls’ swim teams captured Rio Hondo League championships April 28 with victories over San Marino in a dual meet at home.

The Spartan boys won the league title outright, going undefeated at 4-0 after a 97-73 victory over the Titans. La Cañada’s girls earned a three-way share of the championship with San Marino and South Pasadena after each team finished league 3-1, following the Spartans’ 96-74 win against the Titans.

Christian Renfro led the La Cañada boys to victory again with two individual wins, finishing the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute 43.8 seconds and the 100 backstroke in 52.47.

Garrett Chin won the 200 individual medley in 1:56.50 and 500 freestyle in 4:48.80 and Brandon Nguyen also did his part, winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.86.

The Spartans walked away with wins in the 200-yard medley and 400 free relays as well. Nguyen, Chin, Bo Mattix and Matt Myers also won the race (1:40.03) and Renfro, Nguyen, Chin and Mattix took the 400 freestyle in 3:16.13.

The La Cañada girls’ squad leaned on Katy Campbell and Sarah Olson to win a share of the Rio Hondo title.

Campbell was victorious in the 200 freestyle (1:58.78) and 500 freestyle (5:11.65) and Olson came out on top in the 50 freestyle (24.83) and 100 freestyle (59.86). The pair also teamed up with Samantha Campbell and Kenzie Heaton in the 400 freestyle relay for the first time. Not only did they win it, but their time of 3:44.22 exceeded the CIF Division I consideration time of 3:57.30.

Golf team achieves perfect season

The La Cañada High boys’ golf team finished the year a perfect 19-0 (8-0 in Rio Hondo League) with wins over San Marino and Temple City in the final week of the season to capture the league title.

The Spartans defeated the Titans (6-11, 4-4) April 21 with a 187-217 victory at the La Cañada Flintridge Country Club. Jay Lim led La Cañada, shooting a 33, while Andrew Park (36) and Derek Patao (38) were close behind.

Lim put another 33 on the board April 28 against the Rams (8-8, 4-4), as the Spartans went on to win 182-208 at the Eaton Canyon Golf Course. Josh Suh and Daniel Rhee also had good days for La Cañada, shooting a 35 and 36, respectively.

Spartans swept in doubleheader

The La Cañada Spartan hockey team took on Mira Costa in a doubleheader on April 26 and fell in both contests.

The Spartans dropped the first game after Mira Costa shut them out, but came charging back behind Harrison Zuk, who scored with 3:18 left in the second period to give La Cañada a 1-0 lead in the second game. Mira Costa struck back and took a 3-1 lead, but Zuk answered again with a late goal to close the gap to 3-2.

La Cañada got itself into trouble, giving Mira Costa a five-on-three power play in the third period, but escaped the threat without sacrificing another goal. The Spartans couldn’t find an equalizer though, dropping the game, 3-2.
