Riley should bounce back from injury
Dietrich Riley (St. Francis High, 2010) sophomore, UCLA football: As his Bruins were putting the finishing touches on a bounce back win over Cal at the Rose Bowl on Saturday, Riley suffered a scare, as he was carted off the field with a neck injury. But, according to a report from ESPNLosAngeles.com, the safety was released from Huntington Hospital and was with the team for film sessions Sunday afternoon.
“Everything has checked out fine,” UCLA Coach Rick Neuheisel told ESPNLosAngeles.com. “He was here today and looked great and says he’s ready to go. The doctors want to be careful and they’ll look at him tomorrow and we’ll see about his availability for this week, but to hear Dietrich and to see Dietrich, you’d say he’s going to be just fine.”
Riley recorded five tackles (four solo) in the 31-14 win over the Golden Bears, which saw the Bruins improve to 4-4 and 3-2 in the Pacific-12 Conference coming off a 48-12 loss at Arizona the week prior. He made a tackle on Cal running back Isi Sofele with 10:41 left in the fourth quarter and remained on the ground for several minutes before being removed on a stretcher, although he was moving his arms and gave a hand signal to the home crowd, according to ESPNLosAngeles.com.
Erin Hartwig (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2009) junior, Santa Clara cross-country: Hartwig ran a personal-best 22:42 to finish 35th as her team’s No. 3 finisher at the West Coast Conference Cross-Country Championships on Saturday in Belmont.
The 6K race saw Santa Clara finish seventh as a team.
“Erin Hartwig and Carey Parker really stepped it up for us today. Without them it would have been really rough,” Bronco assistant coach Chantelle Wilder told the school’s website. “It’s a tough course and it’s only the second time we have run 6K all season. I am not thrilled with how we placed but I think we finished where we expected. It’s cool to be a part of one of the best conferences in the nation. Our team’s got to see what it’s going to be like to run regionals in a couple weeks. It’s not going to be tougher, but it’s going to be a lot deeper.”
Rian Younker (St. Francis High, 2009) Cal Lutheran football junior: The Kingsmen wrapped up their third straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title with a 54-6 victory over Claremont on Saturday.
Younker, and the rest of Cal Lutheran’s defense, shut down Claremont’s running game. The Stags ran for just 80 yards on 36 carries Saturday, after coming into the game averaging more than 207 yards per game.
The former Golden Knight had another impressive game with five tackles (three solo and two assisted), which was the second most for 10th -ranked Cal Lutheran (6-1, 5-0 in conference) Saturday. Younker also added a sack in the game, bringing his totals to 32 tackles (17 solo and 15 assisted), 10 1/2 tackles for loss and six sacks this season.
Cal Lutheran will face Chapman on the road Saturday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Will Zentmyer (La Cañada High, 2008) San Francisco State cross-country junior: San Francisco State produced its best-ever showing at the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. championships on Oct. 22, taking second place with 67 points.
Zentmyer finished 16th overall in the 8K run with a time of 26 minutes and 38.2 seconds. Zentmyer’s mark was the third-best finish for San Francisco State.
Zentmyer and the Gators will take to the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships in Washington on Saturday. San Francisco State is currently ranked fifth in the NCAA Division II West Region polls, which were released Tuesday.
Eirene Kim (La Cañada High, 2011) University of Chicago volleyball freshman: The All-Area, CIF and Rio Hondo League selection from last year has made an instant impact for the University of Chicago.
Kim has played every match this season and 114 of 142 sets, which is tied for a team high, as the Maroons’ libero. Her 323 digs are third most for Chicago. She has also racked up 23 aces this year.
The Maroons, ranked 16th in NCAA Division III, are playing as well as Kim is this season, as they improved to 27-4, 5-2 in conference, in the Elmhurst Invitational, which was held Oct. 21 and 22.
Chicago went 3-1 in the tournament with victories over Simpson College (25-19, 25-11, 26-24), Wheaton College (25-14, 25-17, 24-26, 25-18) and Wisconsin-Platteville (25-14, 26-24, 25-19) before losing to No. 19 Elmhurst in four games (19-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-21) in the tournament finale. Kim had 39 digs and three aces in the tournament.
The Maroons will pick back up Friday when they travel to Manhattan for the University Athletic Association Championship, which goes through Saturday. Chicago will take on Rochester to being the tournament at 2 p.m. Friday.
