Spartan softball opens league with ‘W’

SOFTBALL

La Cañada 7, Temple City 1: The Spartans took their perfect record into Temple City in their Rio Hondo League opener Tuesday.

Alyssa Stolmack drove in two runs for La Cañada (6-0), going two for three with a double in the game. Catherine Horner had two doubles for the Spartans, who also got a pair of hits from Jessica Ogden and Katy Lee. La Cañada’s Lauren Cox gave up one run, one walk and three hits in another complete game where she recorded 15 strikeouts.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 6, Maranatha 2: The host Tologs (4-2) received seven strikeouts from pitcher Hannah Zika (2-0) to pick up a nonleague victory. Lauren Torres had two hits and drove in three runs.

GIRLS’ SWIMMING

Louisville 85, La Cañada 80: The Campbell sisters, Katy and Samantha, each posted two wins for the Spartans at La Cañada Tuesday.

It was a good measuring stick early in the season for the Spartans (1-1), first-year La Cañada Coach Kristen Dronberger said.

“We are right where we need to be for the moment,” Dronberger said. “It’s the second meet of the season and I am very optimistic.”

Katy won the 200- and 500-yard freestyles and Samantha took the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

La Cañada got its last win in the 200-individual medley from Rachel Wong.

BOYS’ GOLF

La Cañada 189, Temple City 222: The Spartans’ Colin Morikawa earned medalist honors in La Cañada’s Rio Hondo League opener at Eaton Canyon Golf Course Tuesday.

Morikawa shot a one-under-par 34 with La Cañada’s Joshua Suh and Daniel Rhee carding a 36 and 38, respectively, for the Spartans (7-1).

Crespi 209, St. Francis 211: Johnny Brandt had a three-over-par 39 on Tuesday for the Golden Knights in a Mission League match at Braemar Country Club. St. Francis dropped to 4-3, 2-2 in league.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Loyola 3, St. Francis 0: Chris Thompson had 26 assists Tuesday for the host Golden Knights, who suffered a 25-18, 25-21, 25-15 Mission League defeat against the Cubs, ranked No. 1 in Division I. Charles McCarthy added 15 kills for St. Francis (6-3, 3-3 in league).

Pasadena Poly 3, Flintridge Prep 0: Kareem Ismail tallied a team-high 11 kills for Flintridge Prep in a Prep League match Tuesday at Poly.

Michael Lii contributed 22 assists for the Rebels (7-7, 1-1 in league), who got six kills from Tyler Weakland and five from Kory Hamane.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Loyola 18, St. Francis 0: The visiting Golden Knights fell Tuesday in a Mission League match at UCLA. St. Francis dropped to 3-4, 1-2 in league.

Crescenta Valley 14, Flintridge Prep 4: The host Falcons (2-5) got a sweep from their top doubles team of Tim Chong and Patrick Meserkhani (6-0, 6-1, 6-0) in a nonleague match Monday. Crescenta Valley also received a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 singles victory from Albert Chtchyan.

Albert Lee of Flintridge Prep won two singles sets (6-2, 6-1).

BASEBALL

Temple City 4, La Cañada 3: The Spartans missed a chance at knocking off last year’s Rio Hondo League champions as they committed five errors at Temple City Tuesday.

It spoiled a solid outing from La Cañada’s Mitch Russell, who gave up just two hits in five innings on the mound.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for La Cañada (7-4, 1-1 in league).

St. Francis 6, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 2: Anders Schraer hit a three-run double in the sixth inning and picked up his second save of the season Tuesday to lead the visiting Golden Knights in a Mission League game.

Schraer hit a 3-2 pitch for a double with two outs to give St. Francis (4-6, 1-2 in league) a 5-2 lead. He pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the save. Reliever Ryan Garcia picked up the win, tossing a pair of scoreless innings.
