SPORTS ROUNDUP: Spartans tennis improves to 3-0 Tuesday

GIRLS’ TENNIS

La Cañada 13, Notre Dame 5: The Spartans improved to 3-0 Tuesday with sweeps from Sawa Keymuelen (7-5, 6-1, 6-0) in No. 1 singles and Linnea Frazier and Alison Chang (6-1, 6-3, 7-5) in No. 1 doubles.

Serena Zhang and Emily Swanson won both their sets in No. 2 doubles, 6-1, 7-5, before being subbed out with most of the starters in the third round.

La Cañada also got a standout performance from freshman Emily Matuska, who filled for Suma Gudapati in No. 3 singles and overcame a 5-2 deficit for a 7-5 victory.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Crescenta Valley 234, La Cañada 275: The Spartans fell to Falcons at the par-34 La Cañada Flintridge Country Club Tuesday. Crescenta Valley got a 40 from Alice Yoon and 41 from Andrea Han. La Cañada fell to 3-2 with the loss.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

La Cañada 24, J Serra 6: It was a strong start to the 2012 season for the Spartans, who opened on the road against the Lions, Friday.

The score was tied at 1 halfway through the first period until La Cañada established a strong counter attack. Symeon Stefan finished with a game-high eight goals, while Chase Borisoff added seven assists and three goals.

Jeff Lee also made his official varsity debut with La Cañada, which went 16 players deep in its bench in the second half, and blocked 12 shots in the game. The Spartans also received strong defensive performances from two-meter defenders Justin Moh, Peter Loakes and two-meter Bryce Hopkins.

Alden Geller and Johnny Louk scored multiple goals for the Spartans, who also had Connor Shankwieler and Jonathon Ho score the first varsity goals of their careers.
