Sports Roundup: La Cañada High wrestling finishes up strong regular season

La Cañada 54, St. Paul 18: The Spartans concluded a runner-up finish in the Rio Hondo League with a road victory Tuesday evening.

The win officially locked up sole possession of second place for the Spartans, who improved to 4-1 overall and in league and will put in a bid for an at-large berth to the CIF Southern Section Division VI Dual Meet Championships at Redondo Union High School on Feb. 8.

“We’re hoping to get one of those berths,” Spartans Coach Justin Luthey said. “I think we have a good chance. We’re ranked, but you never know.”

The Spartans received pins from freshman Andrew Aghadjanians (113 pounds), junior Jesse Leamon (138), junior Christopher Harb (152) and senior Guillermo Padilla (heavyweight), who wrestled for the first time in league.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 3, Mayfield 2: The Rebels picked up a wild Prep League victory at home on Tuesday.

Flintridge Prep (6-4-4, 2-1-1) trailed late, but received a goal from Chelsea Johnson in the 77th minute off an assist from Katherine Pinney before Johnson scored again in the 80th minute. Alexis Johnson scored the first goal of the match for the Rebels.

Chaminade 2, Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 1: Nia Harris scored the lone goal for the visiting Tologs on Monday in a Mission League match. Sacred Heart goalkeeper Dani Garcia finished with 12 saves. The Tologs dropped to 8-5-2, 1-3-1 in league.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Flintridge Prep 2, Rio Hondo Prep 0: John Treinen and Riley Jones each scored a goal Tuesday to propel the host Rebels to a Prep League victory at the Glendale Sports Complex. Flintridge Prep improved to 11-3-2, 3-0-2 in league.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 11, Marymount 2: Maddy Dulcich finished with five goals and Mary Farley added three on Tuesday to lift the visiting Tologs to a Mission League victory. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Hinckley had eight saves for the Tologs (12-13, 2-3 in league).
