College Update: Arboleda helps Bruins to seventh at Pac-12 Finals
The following are updates on local athletes at the collegiate level.
Anton Arboleda (La Cañada High, 2010) UCLA golf senior: The Bruins took seventh at the Pacific-12 championships at the Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Ariz. on Sunday afternoon.
Arboleda carded the team’s second-best result with a four-round total of 297, which was good for nine-over par and tied for 26th overall. The senior closed strong on Sunday in finishing with an even-par 72, which was tied for 31st.
Arboleda’s previous best came on the first day when the three-time Rio Hondo League MVP shot a one-over 73 on Friday.
As a team, the Bruins posted a final-round score of 363, which is three-over-par, and compiled a 72-hole score of 1,489, which was 49 strokes above par.
Stanford took home the conference title with a total team score of two-under 1,438.
Previous to the Pac-12 championships, the Bruins finished third at the Purdue Boilermaker Invitational, which concluded April 20 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex in West Lafayette, Ind.
The Bruins finished with a team score of three-under 283 and were within six strokes of invite winner Iowa.
Arboleda tied with teammate Jake Knapp on the final day with an even-par 72.
Overall, Arboleda was the third-best Bruin with a score of six-over 222, which tied him for 26th.
Up next for UCLA is the NCAA Regional Championships on May 15.
Andrea Kropp (Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy, 2010) University of Southern California swimming senior: The Trojans swimmer was one of three athletes recently named a Pacific 12 All-Academic second-teamer.
Kropp, a communications major, was joined by teammates Sam Adams and Nick Johnson and boasts a 3.51 GPA.
The honor was awarded on April 16, a little less than a month after Kropp’s last action.
The one-time Tologs standout was sixth in the 200-yard breaststroke ‘B’ final with a time of 2 minutes, 09.44 seconds, which was the 14th overall and earned her consolation finalists honors at the 2014 NCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships on March 22 at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis.
Kropp’s finish topped her mark of 2:09.82 set at the Pac-12 championships on Feb. 25.
Grayson Frazier (La Cañada High, 2010) Pacific University of Oregon: The junior has played a strong role in the resurgence of the Boxers men’s tennis program.
Pacific finished 5-12 last season and 4-8 within the NCAA Division III Northwest Conference, which was good for seventh place.
The Boxers just capped the regular season with a 15-4 overall mark and 11-1 record within conference, which translated into a runner-up finish.
Pacific had won nine matches in a row heading into Saturday’s season finale against No. 14-ranked Whitman in Walla Walla, Wash.
Hopes of capturing a title fell through, though, when Whitman registered a 5-0 victory to take the conference crown.
In that contest, Frazier and Faith Brennan paired as the Boxers No. 2 doubles team and battled the Whitman duo of Jake Hoeger and Andy Riggs before falling in a tough-fought 8-6 defeat, the first conference setback for the Pacific twosome.
Frazier also took part in singles play and was beaten by James Rivers, 6-3, 6-0.
As for the season, the Frazier-Brennan pair posted a 12-4 overall mark and an 8-1 conference record.
Frazier also once teamed up with Giancarlo Battaglia for a 1-0 record, while Frazier posted a 5-7 record as a singles player.
Next up for Pacific is the Division III Championship playoffs in Claremont, beginning May 20.
