Juntendo University Hospital is combining its long-standing clinical excellence with digital innovation to build a smarter, more connected healthcare system that strengthens patient care, research and international collaboration.

For nearly two centuries, Juntendo University Hospital has stood at the forefront of Japanese medicine. Today, under the leadership of Director Dr. Ken Yamaji, the institution is accelerating its transformation by integrating artificial intelligence, data analytics and operational innovation while reinforcing its reputation as one of the country’s leading academic medical centers.

A major milestone has been the creation of an integrated management platform that brings together financial, clinical and operational data previously stored across separate systems. The centralized dashboard provides real-time visibility into hospital performance, allowing management to monitor departmental activity, costs and outcomes more effectively.

“The visualization of income and expenditure has completely changed how we understand hospital performance,” said Dr. Yamaji. “We can clearly identify where resources are being used and make better management decisions.”

Digital transformation extends beyond administration. Across Juntendo University’s six affiliated hospitals, data is being consolidated into a single platform to support large-scale medical research powered by AI. The hospital has also introduced digital services that improve the patient experience, including AI-assisted navigation, appointment management and referral systems that connect patients with appropriate local healthcare providers.

“Japan is often considered behind in AI and digital technologies,” Dr. Yamaji said. “But we are steadily introducing AI into medical care and improving the efficiency of our healthcare system.”

Collaboration has become another strategic priority. Partnerships with technology companies are supporting the development of patient applications that allow users to access examination results, manage appointments and complete payments digitally. The hospital is also working with energy companies to improve sustainability while expanding relationships with medical technology leaders to advance robotic surgery and innovation.

Although Juntendo is already recognized among Japan’s leading hospitals, Dr. Yamaji believes the next challenge lies in increasing its international visibility through stronger research output and global partnerships. “We are proud of the quality and safety of Japanese medicine,” he said. “What we need is greater international collaboration, stronger research ecosystems and the investment that will accelerate innovation.”

As healthcare becomes increasingly data-driven, Juntendo University Hospital is positioning itself as a bridge between Japan’s exceptional clinical expertise and the global medical community. By combining advanced patient care with digital transformation and international collaboration, the institution aims not only to enhance healthcare delivery but also to contribute to the next generation of medical innovation, creating new opportunities for researchers, technology partners and global investors alike.
