Friday’s recap: Cubs 4, Brewers 1

Chicago Tribune

The Cubs overcame Ryan Braun’s home run in the first inning to beat the Brewers 4-1 Friday night at Miller Park. Anthony Rizzo hit his 19th home run off left-hander Neal Cotts in the seventh.

Pivotal at-bats

Slumping Starlin Castro hit a hanging 76 mph curve off Taylor Jungman for a single that scored Kris Bryant in the second, and Castro’s fielder’s choice scored the go-ahead run in the fourth.

Dousing fire

Justin Grimm bailed starter Jason Hammel out of a jam when he struck out Jean Segura with runners at first and second to end the sixth.

Nice grab

Left fielder Chris Coghlan sprinted to make a diving catch in left-center to rob Jonathan Lucroy of a hit in the third with a man on base.

Clutch insurance

Addison Russell singled with two out to score Jorge Soler for 3-1 lead in the sixth.

Key number

1.59 — Hammel’s career ERA at Miller Park.

The quote

“The key primarily is to continue to get our strike zones in order. And more than anything, I’d say runner at third, less than two outs, let’s get them home.” — Joe Maddon
