Dodgers prospect Alex Guerrero’s repaired ear is on the mend

Doctors have detected circulation and growth in the surgically reattached portion of Alex Guerrero’s left ear, increasing the chances that the ear can be saved, according to his agent, Scott Boras.

“It’s looking like the surgery will be successful,” Boras said.

Catcher Miguel Olivo, a teammate of Guerrero on the Dodgers’ triple-A Albuquerque affiliate, bit off the top of the ear during an argument in a May 20 game. The Dodgers suspended Olivo the next day and released him the following day.

Boras said he has no timetable for when Guerrero might be able to return to action and said Guerrero has not yet considered whether to pursue legal action against Olivo.

“The primary focus is on saving the ear,” Boras said.

Guerrero, 27, might have been in the major leagues by now if not for the injury. He was batting .376 with 10 home runs in 33 games. The Dodgers signed the Cuban emigre last fall as a second baseman, but they had asked him last month to work at shortstop and third base for a potential callup.

Boras said Guerrero’s mood has brightened as his prognosis has improved.

“He’s more encouraged,” Boras said. “He was concerned about his well-being and the appearance of his ear.”
