| Walker had never coached varsity girls’ basketball before, but he lifted the Cardinals to a new level in the Southern Section’s smallest division. Mesa Grande had never won more than four games in league or eight games in a season, had never won a league title and had only two playoff victories in eight years of competition. Under Walker, the Cardinals went 9-1 to finish atop the Victory League, posted a 19-9 overall record, won four playoff games and were tied with 39 seconds left in the Division V-A championship game against top-seeded Huntington Beach Liberty Christian. They lost, 43-39, with one of their best players on the bench with leg cramps. | |||
