Football: Pac-5 Division playoff berths still up in the air

Share

It’s the final week of the regular season, and Pac-5 Divison playoff berths still need to be decided, along with two at-large spots. Here’s how things look:

In the Marmonte League, Westlake, Oaks Christian, St. Bonaventure and Agoura are in. Westlake will play Oaks Christian and St. Bonaventure will play Agoura to decide first, second, third and fourth.

In the South Coast, Mission Viejo and Tesoro are in.

In the Moore, Long Beach Poly and Long Beach Cabrillo are in. The Millikan-Lakewood winner should finish third.

In the Serra, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame is in. The Alemany-Crespi winner also will get in.

In the Trinity, St. John Bosco is in. The Orange Lutheran-Mater Dei winner will finish second if St. John Bosco defeats Servite. Santa Margarita plays JSerra in the other finale.

The critical game that could come back to haunt the Trinity League is Bishop Amat defeating Santa Margarita, especially if Santa Margarita finishes fourth. Trinity League teams were 26-4 outside of league, but that game could propel a Serra League team into a wild-card spot.

If Alemany loses and Loyola defeats Bishop Amat, Loyola will finish third in the Serra. If Crespi loses to Alemany, the Celts will be third by virtue of wins over Loyola and Bishop Amat. Crespi, with a 4-6 record, would try to use strength of schedule to overcome its record.

Here’s the criteria that is followed in choosing at-large berths: Head-to-head competition (four points); overall strength of the league (one point); overall win-loss record (one point); strength against common opponents (one point); strength of schedule using overall win-loss record of opponents (two points).

The pariings will be announced Sunday afternoon.
