Boys’ basketball: Compton prevails over Narbonne in opener

On the opening day of the high school basketball season, the Redondo tournament was the place to be on Monday. Highly regarded Compton, ranked No. 6 by The Times, opened with a tougher than expected 74-66 victory over Narbonne.

Compton made lots of turnovers and had extreme difficulty guarding Narbonne senior guard Uchenna Okeneme, who burned the Tarbabes for 33 points. Iziahiah Sweeney had a half-dozen dunks for Compton and finished with 24 points. Isaiah Baley had 16 points and Robert Lewis 14.

Compton will play Mayfair in a 3:30 p.m. quarterfinal on Tuesday. Mayfair defeated Rolling Hills Prep, 74-30. A pair of Ocean View transfers, Dillon Reise and Kendall Small, finished with 26 and 15 points, respectively.

City Section Division I power Westchester cruised to a 69-41 victory over Peninsula. Cameron Young scored 19 points and Nick Hamilton 11. The Comets will play Long Beach Poly at 5 p.m. on Tuesday. Poly defeated Pacific Hills, 70-37. Kameron Murrell scored 14 points.

Campbell Hall held off Lawndale, 63-60. Aaron Holiday finished with 25 points for Campbell Hall. Quincy Pinkard had 16 points and Brodericks Jones 14 for Lawndale. Campbell Hall will face Redondo at 8 p.m. Redondo defeated Morningside, 76-39. Cameron Williams had 14 points and Leland Green 12.

Daniel Hamilton scored 23 points and Tyler Dorsey 22 in St. John Bosco’s 84-35 win over Palos Verdes. Malik Marquetti scored 30 points and made two free throws with 1.8 seconds left to give Long Beach Millikan a 71-69 win over Calabasas.
