Somehow, someway, St. John Bosco pulled out a 98-95 double overtime victory over Santa Margarita on Tuesday night in a Trinity League opener.

“I thought we were incredibly tough,” coach Matt Dunn said.

Josh Camper, after missing two free throws in the second overtime, made two free throws with 13.8 seconds left, and the Braves (17-4) survived a three-point attempt at the end.

Transfer season is picking up steam for football players.

Two Gardena Serra players have left. Anthony Beavers (sophomore) has enrolled at Narbonne. Macen Williams (junior) is also leaving, though he wasn’t at Narbonne on Tuesday.

Both were starters and have college scholarship offers. Williams is the younger brother of USC defensive back Max Williams. Former Crenshaw defensive back Jared Greenfield enrolled at Narbonne last semester after moving to Utah.

Damien has announced the hiring of Matt Bechtel as its new football coach.

Bechtel is a Damien graduate who last season guided South Hills to a 14-1 record and the Division 6 championship.

Before his stint at South Hills, he was head coach at Chino Hills for four seasons, and spent two years at Colony.

The prep baseball season begins early next month but the Sunset/Trinity League challenge will take place next week at the Great Park Stadium in Irvine. It is being held in conjunction with the Ryan Lemmon Foundation.

The schedule:

Jan. 15: Fountain Valley vs. JSerra, 3 p.m.; Huntington Beach vs. Mater Dei, 5:30 p.m.; Edison vs. St. John Bosco, 8 p.m.

In a policy memo sent out to principals, the Los Angeles Unified School District informed administrators on Tuesday that all practices and games will be canceled if there’s a work stoppage.

That means the City Section sports season will come to a halt if teachers go on strike. United Teachers Los Angeles has announced it plans to strike on Thursday. The two sides had a bargaining session on Monday and plan to meet again on Wednesday. There’s also a possibility the strike could be delayed until Monday.

LAUSD says games will be postponed and rescheduled. Practices “may not be relocated during a work stoppage” and will be considered a violation of CIF rules.
