It’s close to two hours before Hart plays host to Sherman Oaks Notre Dame in a Southern Section Division 2AA basketball playoff opener.

Biola-bound Whitten Dominguez is listening to “Stir Fry” by Migos, wearing earbuds as he dances in a defensive stance in the gym while reading from a piece of scratch paper that has the team game plan. No other Hart players are in the gym as the girls’ basketball team practices.

“He’s maniacal,” coach Tom Kelly said.

It seemed like a marriage made in heaven. Jim Benkert, the football coach at Westlake for 26 years, moved a short walk away to private school power Oaks Christian in 2015.

This past season, he guided the Lions to a Southern Section Division 2 championship. Oaks Christian was set to return all but two starters in 2018.

And yet, Benkert said Wednesday he is out as coach. He cleaned out his office in the morning after finding out Tuesday night that the school had already hired a director of football — former Oaks Christian assistant Mike Sherrard, who had been an assistant at Alemany.

There’s trouble brewing with the Oaks Christian football program.

Jim Benkert, who just completed his third season as head coach, said Tuesday night that he told the school’s chief operating officer, Mike Parkinson, that he would deliver a letter of resignation to him on Wednesday morning.

“I’m not happy,” Benkert said.

The Southern Section Open Division basketball playoffs begin Friday with four can’t-miss outstanding games. Other divisions will have their top games Wednesday.

There will be the usual mismatches, but here’s a look at first-round games to watch.

In Division 1, Windward at Dominguez matches UCLA-bound Jules Bernard against Cal State Fullerton-bound Wayne Arnold. Both teams have been ranked in the Los Angeles Times’ top 25.

It’s transfer season for high school quarterbacks, and the number has already reached at least 11.

Most left at the fall break. People want to enroll during the spring semester for spring practice.

The most expected transfer involved Carter Freedland, the backup quarterback at Santa Ana Mater Dei last season as a sophomore. When J.T. Daniels announced he was graduating early to enroll at USC, the job was his, right?
