It’s right there on social media: “Jason Negro Youth Academy dates released.”

There’s a photo of the St. John Bosco coach, arms folded, surrounded by four Braves players. Then there’s details about the camp: 7 on 7 team tryouts; lineman camp; combine tests; 7 on 7 passing scrimmages.

The fee is $20. Jan. 12, 19, Feb. 9. Athletes in grades 6 to 8 are invited. No high school kids.

Drew Casani
Drew Casani (Loyola High School)

Loyola High School has selected Drew Casani to take over as head football coach.

Casani coached linebackers and was the college recruiting coach last season. He’s a 1991 Loyola graduate who was director of scouting for UCLA and a scout for the St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers.

He takes over a program that was once Division 1 but could drop to Division 3 next season. The Cubs continue to bring in coaches with ties to former coach Steve Grady, who was head coach for 29 years until his retirement in 2004, winning four Division 1 titles.

Looking cool, calm and confident, Robert McRae made two free throws with 2.3 seconds left to give Fairfax a 58-57 victory over Santa Clarita Christian on Saturday night at Sierra Canyon.

“I practice that shot over and over,” McRae said.

Santa Clarita Christian had taken the lead with 15 seconds left on a dunk by Kaleb Lowery after a missed shot.

Bru McCoy, The Times’ player of the year, from Santa Ana Mater Dei, announced Saturday he’s headed to USC.

The wide receiver-linebacker adds to the Trojans’ talent at the receiver position. Also announcing for the Trojans was Orange Lutheran receiver Kyle Ford.

St. John Bosco cornerback Chris Steele committed to Florida.

Much of the attention in the first two months of the basketball season has focused on Sierra Canyon and Rancho Christian as the teams to beat in the Southern Section, but don’t count out defending Open Division champion Santa Ana Mater Dei.

The Monarchs are 16-1 with a starting lineup of all underclassmen, and their front line measures 6-9, 6-9 and 6-8. In other words, don’t count out coach Gary McKnight, who found a way to beat Sierra Canyon last season.

“It’s a great group of kids,” he said. “They’re really jelling as a team.”
