Daniel Sedin to join Canucks and practice on Tuesday

The Vancouver Canucks announced Monday that winger Daniel Sedin, who missed the first three games of their playoff series against the Kings because of a concussion, will join the team for a full practice on Tuesday. A loss to the Kings on Wednesday at Staples Center would end the season for the Canucks, who won the Presidents’ Trophy for having the NHL’s best regular-season record.

The announcement, made on the team’s Twitter feed, was something of a surprise. Sedin, who was injured March 21 when he took an elbow to the head from Chicago’s Duncan Keith, had practiced once last week but was unable to play in the Canucks’ two losses at Vancouver. He didn’t accompany the team to Los Angeles for Game 3, a 1-0 victory by the Kings on Sunday.

His return could boost the Canucks’ offense — he scored 30 goals this season — and their morale. They’ve scored only four goals in three games and have gone 0 for 14 on the power play. His twin and linemate, Henrik, has clearly missed him, and the connection they have both as twins and as world-class players who see the ice so well.

Canucks Coach Alain Vigneault was scheduled to comment on the situation Monday afternoon at the team’s Santa Monica hotel.

The Kings are trying to become the 10th No. 8 seed to defeat a No. 1 seed since the league adopted the current playoff format in 1993. A No. 8 seed has never swept a No. 1 seed.

The Presidents’ Trophy winner has been eliminated in the first round five times, and on four of those occasions was taken out by an eighth-seeded team.
