The second race on the Breeders’ Cup card at Santa Anita seemed a little like the first when jockey Mike Smith went two-for-two when he won the Juvenile Turf aboard Outstrip. Smith rallied the horse in deep stretch and went past Giovanni Boldini and a tiring Bobby’s Kitten to win by a half-length.

Outstrip paid $14.00, $6.80 and $3.60. Giovanni Boldini returned $6.40 and $3.40, and Bobby’s Kitten, named for the late trainer Bobby Frankel, paid $2.40 to show.

Bobby’s Kitten led comfortably until mid-stretch, when he was challenged by Giovanni Boldini. They engaged in a spirited duel, but it was Outstrip with a clear path and a strong kick that flew by on the outside.

The one-mile race for 2-year-olds brought a field of 13.

Smith extended his record-setting number of Breeders’ Cup wins to 19. It was the first time he has ridden the British import. It was Outstrip’s third win in five lifetime races.

“The trip was really good,” Smith said. “I managed to get covered up, just made my way and followed the right horses. I was following two of the greatest turf riders in America, Gary Stevens and Corey Nakatani. They showed me a great way to go, and it really worked out for me.”
