Racing! Looking forward to a big weekend of Derby preps

Share

Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter but we couldn’t find any Oscar-worthy performances on Sunday.

Hopefully you didn’t put aside a lot of time to read today’s newsletter, as it was a pretty quiet Sunday. So, we won’t waste a lot of your time. But next week, there is a fantastic card at Santa Anita on Saturday where the Santa Anita Handicap may be the third best race on the card.

So, to give you something to chew on for today, we’ve got one of those question and answer sessions about everything but horse racing. On Saturday, you saw Midnight Bisou win the $100,000 Santa Ysabel Stakes Stakes. The talented filly is trained by Bill Spawr, who is as likeable as he is talented on the local backstretch. We caught up with Bill to ask him the following impertinent questions.

Question: What’s your favorite TV show that you are currently watching?

Spawr: “Last Man Standing”. I get a kick out of that show.

If you weren’t a trainer a trainer, what would you be?

A football coach. I started out wanting to be a football coach and the got into horse racing.

What’s your all-time favorite movie or book?

“Tin Cup” and I don’t play golf. I can watch it over and over again.

If you could have lunch or dinner with anyone living or dead, who would that be?

Bill Belichick, just to talk football with him. I want to get into his mind. He’s a smart guy and he really knows football. I’d just like to hear his thoughts and compare it to training horses.

What’s No. 1 on your bucket list?

Win the Kentucky Derby. I’m undefeated in it. (Note: Spawr has never had a Kentucky Derby starter.)

What’s your favorite food?

Kale. I know I’m odd. I just learned to like it. I like to mix it up with different things. I think it’s healthy. I like to eat kale and broccoli.

What’s your favorite kind of music?

I like jazz, always have. I like Lou Rawls, so I guess I like blues and jazz.

(My note: Kale? Really?)

Baffert trio

Trainer Bob Baffert seems to have settled on where some of his top 3 year olds are going. McKinzie, who is credited with being unbeaten even though one of his wins was by disqualification, appears headed for a showdown with Bolt D’Oro in Saturday’s San Felipe at Santa Anita.

McKinzie worked at Santa Anita on Sunday and went 7 furlongs in 1:23.80 with Drayden Van Dyke in the saddle. Bolt D’Oro is scheduled to work on Monday under Victor Espinoza. The Triple Crown winning jockey Espinoza is not scheduled to ride Bolt on Saturday, instead it will be Javier Castellano. As Kentucky Derby day gets closer you can expect a lot of shuffling of jockeys as a few of them are named on more than one horse.

Baffert told Ed Golden of Santa Anita that Solomini is scheduled to go in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn on March 17.

Once raced Justify, a 9 ½-length winner, is scheduled to go in the Sunland Derby on March 25. Should be an interesting three weekends.

Santa Anita review

Take The One O One won Sunday’s feature, a $56,000 allowance race over 6 ½ furlongs. Good thing he wasn’t named Take The Four O Five or Take The One Ten or he most assuredly would have been stopped. As the second favorite, he took the lead after a quarter-mile and nursed a lead all the way around to beat Surfing Star by half-a-length.

Trained by Brian Koriner and ridden by Joe Talamo, he paid $4.80, $2.40 and $2.10.

“Brian’s done a great job bring this horse back,” Talamo told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “Obviously, we didn’t like drawing the rail first time back, but broke sharply and he put me in a good position. I had a lot of horse down the lane and I flagged him a couple times to keep him focused.”

Big races review

A look at graded stakes or races worth more $100,000 or more on Sunday.

With the Tiznow Stakes being cancelled at Santa Anita, there were none.

CAUSEFORCOMMOTION stalked off the rail then outside a rival, bid alongside the pacesetter leaving the backstretch and on the second turn, took a short lead into the stretch, battled outside that foe through a stiff drive and held gamely between foes under some left handed urging. VASILIKA chased outside a rival then between foes, continued outside a rival on the second turn and into the stretch, came out in the drive and closed willingly three deep on the line. ACHIRA took the early lead and angled in, set the pace inside, dueled inside the winner into and on the second turn, fought back through a stiff drive and continued gamely to the wire. LYNNE'S LEGACY angled in and chased outside a rival then inside leaving the second turn, came out in the stretch and found her best stride late. SCANDAL saved ground stalking the pace throughout and was outfinished. NIGHT TIME INC (ARG) chased inside then a bit off the rail on the second turn and into the stretch, split rivals in the drive and lacked the needed rally. SASINI (GB) settled inside, went outside a rival on the second turn and three wide into the stretch and could not offer the necessary late kick. MIDNIGHT LILLY angled in and chased inside throughout and weakened in the drive. PISTOL PACKIN ROSE bobbled some at the break, stalked three deep, dropped back and drifted out leaving the second turn, came four wide into the stretch and had little left for the drive.
