Peyton Manning congratulates Drew Brees on breaking his passing record: ‘You’ve ruined that for me’

Peyton Manning’s life has little meaning left now that he is no longer the NFL’s all-time leader in passing yards.

At least that’s what the former Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos quarterback attempted to lead us to believe in a humorous video paying tribute to the new leader in that category: the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees.

Brees broke Manning’s record of 71,940 career passing yards Monday night with a 62-yard touchdown pass to rookie Tre’Quan Smith late in the second quarter of the Saints’ 43-19 victory over the Washington Redskins.

“Drew, for 1,000 days, I’ve held the record for all-time passing yards in the NFL. And I gotta tell you it’s been the greatest 1,000 days of my life. And thanks to you, that’s over now,” Manning deadpanned in the video, which was played on the video boards at the Superdome after Brees broke the record. “And you’ve ruined that for me.”

Manning — a New Orleans native whose father, Archie, was a star quarterback for the Saints — delivers his message in the clip while slicing tomatoes.

“Thank you very much,” Manning said, addressing Brees. “I have nothing left to look forward to except slicing my tomatoes, making dinner for my family, putting together this wedge salad.”

Manning still holds the all-time record for touchdown passes — for now — with 539. He’s followed by Brett Favre (508), Tom Brady (500) and Brees (499).

“Also let this serve as the congratulations for the touchdown record, because as you see, I’m very busy. I don’t have the time to keep doing these videos for you congratulating you.”

Manning does add his sincere congratulations at the end.

“You’ve done it the right way,” he said. “All your hard work and dedication have paid off.”
