Cornerback Troy Hill, who was released by the Rams on Tuesday, cleared waivers and was re-signed to the practice squad Wednesday, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Hill, 25, was released by the team three days after he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Hill was arrested after he crashed his white Mercedes-Benz into the back of a big rig on the westbound Ventura Freeway near Encino, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Rams Coach Jeff Fisher said Tuesday that Hill was released because “he didn’t put the team first.”

But he left the door open for the return of a player who has started four games and is fourth on the team with 38 tackles.

“I think people deserve second chances in life,” Fisher said after Tuesday’s practice. “I think he learned from it, but I was just disappointed in his choices.”

Hill said Wednesday that he was thankful for another opportunity and realized he needs to work hard to regain the trust of the organization and his teammates.

“It’s a humbling experience and I’m thankful for these coaches,” he said. “I let ’em down and they gave me this second opportunity. So it’s a humbling experience and I just want to do everything I can to show them that I can be trusted and work my way back.”

When asked if he could shed more light on the accident, Hill simply responded, “No.”

He said he apologized to Fisher as well as teammates.

“I just told him I let him down and he gave me this opportunity and I just let him know everything that was going on with me. I was honest with him,” Hill said of his conversation with Fisher.

“I ain’t really going into too much details but the [teammates] I was talking to, I just let them know that ‘I let you boys down. I should have been out there with you all on Sunday.’ It hurt me more than anything trying to watch the game from a TV screen and I’m not out there. That guilt that I had that I let them down regardless of what the situation was.”

The Rams also re-signed cornerback Steve Williams, whom they had signed and released earlier this season.

Rookie cornerback Michael Jordan was promoted from the practice squad to the roster on Tuesday. Blake Countess was promoted to the roster last week.

The Rams released cornerback Dwayne Gratz on Tuesday.
