Rex Ryan, Geno Smith and Jets: Haven’t we seen this picture before?

Remember that movie from a couple years ago, the one about the New York Jets coach stubbornly sticking with his struggling young quarterback even though fans were booing and chanting the name of the backup QB?

Can you believe that even though the original was pretty much a flop, they went ahead and made a sequel?

It’s true. Rex Ryan is back in the starring role as the Jets head coach after somehow surviving the Mark Sanchez years. But now it’s 2014 and Geno Smith plays the part of the young starting quarterback.

Other than that, though, they really didn’t change much from the first one. Like Sanchez before him, Smith is seeing his share of adversity -- he’s turned the ball over eight times this season, including an interception and fumble during Sunday’s 24-17 loss to the Detroit Lions.

And like Sanchez, Smith is hearing it from the fans at MetLife Stadium, although he has a proven NFL quarterback in Michael Vick backing him up. All Sanchez had behind him was the popular but questionable Tim Tebow and the inexperienced Greg McElroy.

That’s a nice little twist. Here’s another one -- instead of Ryan cursing at a fan like back in 2011, this time around it’s Smith, who yelled an expletive at a heckler after Sunday’s game.

“First of all, I want to apologize if any kids saw me saying any negative remarks walking off the field,” Smith said to open his postgame news conference. “I kind of let my temper get the best of me in that situation, and it’s a part of my learning process.”

But for the most part, it’s just more of the same, with Ryan standing by Smith even with his team at 1-3 and facing a brutal upcoming schedule (at San Diego, Denver, at New England).

“I’m confident in Geno. If Geno’s healthy, then Geno Smith will start,” Ryan said. “I’m not going to replace him. I feel good about Geno, and again, I think he’s going to get it turned. He’s a tough, resilient young man, and I think we’re going to win.”

Man, can’t they come up with anything original these days?
