NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. approaches four years with no wins
Only one NASCAR driver has 10 top-10 finishes through the first 13 races this season in the Sprint Cup Series --Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Yet despite his consistency, the immensely popular Earnhardt has yet to win this year, history indicates there’s a good chance he won’t win next weekend, either, and that would mean Earnhardt then will have gone four years and 143 races since his last visit to Victory Lane.
Earnhardt, 37, finished fourth Sunday at Dover (Del.) International Speedway in his No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet, a race won by his teammate Jimmie Johnson.
The series moves to Pocono (Penn.) Raceway next Sunday, where Earnhardt has never won in 24 starts. Assuming he doesn’t win that race, it will be four years since his last victory, June 15, 2008, at Michigan International Speedway.
“We are getting close” to a win, Earnhardt said after the Dover race, which left him third in the Cup championship standings, 10 points behind leader Greg Biffle.
“We are finishing good when we are not winning,” Earnhardt said. “It was a good day for us, a good points day. I can’t complain too much about how we are doing.”
