Chris Froome set to win Tour de France

A relatively easy ride down the Champ-Elysees is all that separates Chris Froome from becoming the 2013 Tour de France champion.

The British rider finished third Saturday in Stage 20 of the tour, effectively winning the race since Sunday’s ride into Paris is mostly a ceremonial affair.

Saturday’s 78-mile trek through the Alps was considered the last true test for Froome, who is set to win the race after playing a leading role in helping countryman and teammate Bradley Wiggins win the race last year.

Nairo Quintana, a 23-year-old Colombian sensation who is already being pegged as a future Tour de France winner, solidified his hopes of a podium finish in Paris by winning Stage 20. It was Quintana’s first ever stage win in a grand tour.

Quintana is poised to win the white jersey for the race’s best young rider.

Heading into Paris, Froome has an overall lead of 5 minutes, 3 seconds over Quintana. Joaquin Rodriguez, who finished second Saturday, is 44 seconds behind Quintana.

Two-time race winner Alberto Contador, who was dropped by the leaders during Saturday’s final climb, is in fourth place, 7:10 behind Froome.
