  • Former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore charged with home invasion, stalking, and breaking and entering.
  • The alleged incident is said to have occurred following his termination for an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.
  • Prosecutors allege Moore ‘terrorized’ a woman, whom he had once dated, after losing his job.

Former Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore has been charged with home invasion, stalking and breaking and entering in connection with an alleged incident that occurred after he was fired from his job with the Wolverines this week.

The Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office accused Moore on Friday of “unlawfully entering the dwelling of a victim with whom Mr. Moore had a dating relationship.” Michigan fired Moore with cause Wednesday after a university investigation found “credible evidence” he “engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member,” the school said in a statement.

Moore, who has been held in Washtenaw County Jail since Wednesday, appeared in court via video. The home invasion count is a third-degree felony and punishable by up to five years in prison and a $2,000 fine. The other two counts are misdemeanors.

A not-guilty plea was entered on Moore’s behalf.

First Assistant Prosecutor Kati Rezmierski told the court Moore “barged his way into” the woman’s apartment while she was home, grabbed butter knives and scissors and threatened to take his life in front of her.

Rezmierski said Moore told the woman, “My blood is on your hands” and “You ruined my life” as part of “a series of very, very threatening, intimidating, terrifying, quite frankly, statements and behaviors.”

Michigan fired coach Sherrone Moore after finding ‘credible evidence’ of ‘an inappropriate relationship.’ He was later jailed in connection with an investigation into an alleged assault.

“While I understand that there isn’t evidence to suggest that he directly threatened the victim with any of those implements that I’ve indicated, the totality of the behavior is highly threatening and highly intimidating,” Rezmierski said. “She was terrorized.”

Defense attorney Joe Simon said Moore was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation after being detained Wednesday and then returned to the jail.

“There’s no evidence to suggest he’s a threat,” Simon said.

Bond was set at $25,000 with the additional conditions of GPS tether monitoring, mental health treatment and orders not to contact the alleged victim or go to her residence. A probable cause conference was scheduled for Jan. 22.

Simon told reporters at the courthouse he expected Moore to post bond Friday. The attorney would not comment on Moore’s mental health state.

Moore is married with three young children. He was 17-8 in two seasons as the Wolverines’ coach. The team is set to play Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31 under interim coach Biff Poggi.
