Los Angeles County coroner’s officials today confirmed that the body found in the foothills above Burbank on Monday is that of missing FBI agent Stephen Ivens.

Ivens’ body was found not far from his home in the 1700 block of Scott Road, where the 36-year-old agent was last seen in May. A pair of hikers made the discovery Monday evening after they noticed a foul smell, police said.

The body was near a cement path about 300 feet behind a small chapel in an upper parking lot of St. Francis Xavier School.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winters said the cause of death had yet to be determined pending autopsy results. He also could not yet say how long Ivens had been dead.

On Tuesday, Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn said there was “every indication” that it had been there “from the first day” he was reported missing.

Ivens’ gun was also recovered near his body.
