Car burglaries in Burbank target Honda batteries

A string of car burglaries targeting the batteries of 1990s-era Honda vehicles occurred overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday, police said

The first incident occurred on the 3600 block of Clark Avenue. The owner of a 1998 maroon Honda Civic found her driver’s side door ajar in the morning, and when she tried to start the car, nothing happened, said Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn.

She then opened the hood and saw that the battery had been removed.

The driver’s side window appeared to have been pried open, Ryburn said.

The second incident occurred between Clark Avenue and Cordova Street — around the corner from the first incident — with the battery stolen from a 1999 Honda Accord.

The vehicle’s owner saw her hood ajar in the morning and was unable to start her car.

There were no obvious signs of forced entry in that incident, but Ryburn said the suspect or suspects may have entered the vehicle without leaving pry marks.

The third incident occurred between 1 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the 900 block of Cordova Street, where a battery was stolen from a 1992 black Honda Civic.

Officers investigating the incident saw pry marks on a window.

“Obviously, suspects targeted that model because they either had previously done this or knew how to get into the car quickly,” Ryburn said.

In September 2013, Burbank police also saw a rash of auto burglaries where suspects were stealing side mirrors from high-end vehicles such as Mercedes-Benzes and BMWs.

“Car-part [burglaries] are one of those that are really hard to deter, other than locking your car and parking in a well-lit location,” Ryburn said.
