Man being evaluated after barricading himself inside Burbank apartment

A 40-year-old man was placed on a psychiatric hold after breaking into and barricading himself in an acquaintance’s Burbank home for an hour Sunday night, police said.

At 11:25 p.m., police responded to the 1900 block of West Olive Avenue after the man allegedly broke into a 31-year-old woman’s apartment after having been kicked out earlier in the day, said Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn.

The man, who was not identified by police because he was admitted for psychiatric evaluation, was a friend of the victim’s ex-boyfriend, police said.

He had been at the woman’s home earlier in the day, apparently “distraught” over an ex-girlfriend, Ryburn said.

After getting kicked out of the woman’s apartment Sunday, the man reportedly forced his way inside later that night, police said. The woman ran outside when police arrived.

While barricaded in the home, the man was acting irrational, making incoherent statements and had admitted to taking prescription medication, according to police reports. He also appeared to be drunk, police said.

Officers reportedly negotiated with the man for an hour before he exited the apartment. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital for a 72-hour mental health evaluation.
