Youth Scene: Aim High finishes high again

Aim High Hoops Elite completed its second successful tournament series with Big City Sports by taking the championship title on Aug. 21 and placing second two weeks ago at Corona High.

The dominant play of Nissan Mo and Nicholas Ursini set the tone right away for Aim High Hoops Elite.

In the backcourt, Aim High was led by the stellar play of Mikey Ruiz, Kyle Hatch and Kevin Ray. Daniil Cheadle and Jack Beeker hit several key buckets to support the dominate front-court play of AHHE.

Contributing off the bench, Turner Maza heated up the court by shutting down his opponents’ top scorers.

Angelo Ursini stole the weekend by dominating the post position.

Maya and Nefertiti Van Den Heever along with Michael McCardell provided key minutes and depth throughout the weekend tournament .

Aim High Hoops Elite was led by Coach Troy Hall.

Seahawks post shutout

The Newport Mesa Jr. Midget Seahawks football team shut out the South Gate Aztecs, 34 - 0.

Holding the Aztecs to only three completions was strong defense from Nick Yi, Reed Rutter, Chase Garbers, Collin Pipkin and Roman Hays. Mickey Quinn and Sutty Barbato recorded sacks. Dylan Campos made an interception and Blake Kormos recovered a fumble.

The offensive line comprised of Teddy Barber, Karl Donovan and Connor Brazeel was dominant.

Quarterback Stephen Von Der Ahe was 10 for 20 for 130 yards including a 30-yard touchdown toss to William Hunter. Also making key receptions were Andy Strader and Peter Bush.

In addition, Jason Simaan had a 50-yard punt return, while Anthony Batista rushed over 100 yards for two touchdowns. Kormos also ran in two touchdowns.
