Falcons face No. 2 seed

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

South Torrance at Crescenta Valley, 7 p.m.: Crescenta Valley (19-9) will continue its surprising CIF Southern Section Division III playoff run against second-seeded South Torrance (23-4) in a quarterfinal match tonight. The Falcons posted a 25-19, 22-25, 25-14, 25-13 second-round home win Thursday after rallying from a 2-0 deficit to topple L.A. Baptist on Tuesday. South Torrance, which won the Pioneer League title, has posted playoff victories against Cypress and Santa Ynez.

The winner will meet third-seeded Burroughs or Rio Mesa in a semifinal contest Tuesday.

TRACK AND FIELD

Crescenta Valley and Glendale in CIF Southern Section Division I prelims: The Falcons and Nitros will compete in the event at 10 a.m. today at Trabuco Hills High. Several Falcons and Nitros enter fresh off winning Pacific league championships. Among the qualifiers on the boys’ side were Mike Davis of Glendale in the 100- and 200-meter races, Crescenta Valley’s Josh Strachewski in the 110 and 300 hurdles, Tyler Bradshaw of Crescenta Valley in the pole vault, Michael Duncan of Crescenta Valley in the 800, Robert Casaburi of Glendale in the triple jump, Glendale’s 4x100 relay team of Davis, Jeffrey Massin, Tristan Pacba and Carlos Navarro Esperanza and the Nitros’ 4x400 relay team of Davis, Massin, Chris Canlas and Navarro Esperanza. Those who qualified in the girls’ competition included Glendale’s Sophia Amodia in the 100 and 300 hurdles, Glendale’s Leana Setian in the 1,600, Megan Melnyk of Crescenta Valley in the 800, Crescenta Valley’s Cali King in the 800, Natalie Queally of Glendale in the triple jump, Marquita Lopez-Englemen of Glendale in the discus, Crescenta Valley’s Brooke Moultrie in the 3,200, Emmie Walker of Crescenta Valley in the high jump and Kayleigh Carrillo of Crescenta Valley in the 200 and 400. Carrillo, Melnyk, King and Walker qualified in the 4x400 relay and Walker, Carrillo, Claudia Sepulveda and Noel Wong qualified in the 4x100.

The nine competitors with the best marks in each field event will qualify for the finals May 19 at Mount San Antonio College. In the running events, qualifying will be each heat winner plus the next fastest time to total nine competitors advancing to the finals.

St. Francis and Hoover in CIF Southern Section Division III prelims: The Golden Knights and Tornadoes will each send one male athlete apiece to the event, which will be held at 10 a.m. today at Estancia High. St. Francis’ James Knowles will take part in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles. Jeremy Zadoorian will participate in the 800.

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy and Flintridge Prep in CIF Southern Section Division IV prelims: The Rebels and Tologs will have plenty of representation at the event, which will start at 10 a.m. today at Carpinteria High. Among those scheduled to participate for the Tologs include Caroline Treinen in the pole vault, Stephanie Vargas in the 400, Madzie MacVaugh in the high jump, Drew Washington in the 400, Kayla Montgomery in the 400, Noëlle Niederhaus in the 800 and Hailey James in the 300 hurdles. The 4x100 relay team of Vargas, Niederhaus, Washington and Montgomery and 4x400 relay squad of Vargas, Washington, Daelyn Moon and Montgomery also qualified.

For Flintridge Prep, the boys’ athletes who will take part in the prelims are the 1,600 relay team of Tyler Shum, James Bradley, Mike Defond and Jake Johnson, Gareth Weiss in the pole vault, the 4x100 relay team of Kyle Hamane, Stefan Smith, Henry Griffith and Shum, Shum in the 400, Daniel Jung in the discus, West Nowotny in the discus and Smith in the 200 and long jump, Bradley in the 1,600 and 800, Miah Webb in the 200 and 400, Elias Ellison in the 1,600 and 3,200 and Manny Perez in the 800.

On the girls’ side for Flintridge Prep, it will be led by Kate Evans in the 1,600, 3,200 and 300 hurdles and 400.

The Rebels girls’ 1,600-meter relay squad and pole vaulter Barrett Weiss also advanced.

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

Glendale Community College in Southern California Finals: A handful of Vaqueros will participate in the meet, which will be held at San Diego Mesa College.

Field events will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the races will start at 11.

Nohemi Martinez, Grace Zamudio, Angie Martinez, Alyssa Selve and Cecilia Nicolas will take part in the women’s 5,000-meter race. Rico Gutierrez will participate in the men’s 5,000.

In the women’s portion of the meet, Nicolas and Angela Martinez will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Zamudio and Selve will run the 1,500 and Lilia Asserian will take part in the 800. Zamudio and Nohemi Martinez will race in the 10,000 and Justice Shank will participate in the high jump.

Vladimir Diaz, Yeltsen Vasquez and Issac Diosdado will take part in the men’s steeplechase and Robert Pulido will participate in the hammer.
