Yard sale: The West Palm Beach Fishing Club’s annual Marine Yard Sale is 7 a.m. to noon April 16 at the club’s headquarters at 201 Fifth Street, West Palm Beach. The event typically features everything from rods, reels, lures, gaffs and landing nets to anchors, dock lines, coolers and dive gear, all of it donated to the club over the past year. Swordfish tournament: The Sunburned Swordfish Tournament is 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 16, with weigh-in from 4-6 at the Lighthouse Point Yacht & Racquet Club. Entry fee is $750. Captains meeting is 6-8 p.m. Friday at the club. Call 954-420-5001.

Fishing Derby: The early registration deadline is April 15 for the Greater Lantana Chamber of Commerce’s 22nd annual Lantana Fishing Derby, a family oriented tournament for kingfish, dolphin and wahoo on May 14, with the weigh-in at the Old Key Lime House restaurant on East Ocean Avenue. The early entry fee is $200 per team and $250 thereafter. First prize is $2,500 for the heaviest overall fish. The heaviest of each species wins $1,250, and there are cash prizes for second and third in each category. The captain’s meeting and party is 6 p.m. May 12 at the Lantana Recreation Center, 418 S. Free class: U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 54 has a free boating safety class from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 23 at Harvey Oyer Park in Boynton Beach. The cost of the class is being paid by a grant from the Perry J. Cohen Foundation ( in memory of one of the two boys who were lost at sea out of Jupiter Inlet last summer. Fishing tournament: The John Michael Baker Fishing Tournament is 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 23 out of Lauderdale Yacht Club. Entry fee is $250 per boat for two anglers. Bass tournament: The Everglades Bassmasters of South Florida have the 45th annual Open Team Tournament April 24 on Lake Okeechobee out of Roland and Mary Ann Martin’s Marina in Clewiston. Entry fee is $80 per boat and includes the big bass pot. Contact Tony Crowder at or 954-254-9072.

Fishing meeting: Johannes Csonka and Tony Arruza present “Tips & Tactics for Catching Bahamas Yellowfin Tuna and Photographing Your Expedition” at the April 27 meeting of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club. Fishing school: A “Ladies, Let’s Go Fishing!” University for women, men and teenagers is April 29-May 1 at the I.T. Parker Community Center in Dania Beach. The event has classroom presentations on inshore and offshore fishing and hands-on skill sessions covering knot-tying, bait rigging, casting, gaffing and backing up a boat trailer. Benefit tournament: The Fort Lauderdale Meat Mayhem tournament to benefit the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and featuring a guaranteed $10,000 for first place, is April 30. Eligible species are kingfish, tuna, dolphin and wahoo. Boats can leave from any inlet. Weigh-in is 4 p.m. at Pier 66 in Fort Lauderdale.
