Outdoors calendar: Kayak classes, boating safety courses
Oct. 2: A free bird walk starts at 8 a.m. at Tall Cypress Natural Area in Coral Springs. The first segment of the walk is at the boardwalk and parking lot area, which is just over half a mile. The second segment is 1.5 miles. Preregistration is required. Call Quiet Waters Park at 954-357-5100.
Oct. 5: Capt. Rick Murphy and Capt. Geoff Page present “Fishing for Snook & Redfish” at the inshore meeting of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at the clubhouse at 201 Fifth Street. Visit westpalmbeachfishingclub.org or call 561-832-6780.
Oct. 9: West Lake Park in Hollywood has a basic kayak class for ages 13 and up from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Cost is $35. Preregistration and prepayment are required at least two days before the class. Call the park at 954-357-5161.
Oct. 13: Capt. Bouncer Smith of Miami Beach presents “Deep Drop Bottom Fishing” from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Oct. 13 at Dusky Sport Center, 110 N. Bryan Rd., Dania Beach. Cost is $15 and redeemable for store merchandise. Call 954-922-8890.
Oct. 15: U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 34 has an eight-hour safe boating class at Imperial Point Hospital, 6401 N. Federal Hwy., Fort Lauderdale. The course encompasses seamanship, equipment and legal requirements, emergencies and navigation rules. Cost is $50 and there are discounts for multiple family members. Oct. 16: West Lake Park in Hollywood has a Moonlight Paddle from 6:30-9 p.m. Oct. 16. The trip along the park’s trails is for experienced paddlers, or those who have completed one of the park’s paddling classes, ages 13 and up. Cost is $35 per person. Nov. 4-5: The 2016 Florida Fly Fishing Expo is Nov. 4-5 at The Plantation on Crystal River. The annual event features new fly fishing gear and instruction. Among the instructors are tarpon tournament winner Andy Mill of Boca Raton, Oviedo fly fishing school owner Jon Cave and innovative fly-tier and guide Blane Chocklett of Roanoke, Va. Admission is $25 for both days and free for ages 16 and younger accompanied by an adult.
Nov. 9: The Fort Lauderdale chapter of Ducks Unlimited has its auction and banquet from 6-10 p.m. at Hugh’s Culinary in Oakland Park. The country western hoedown-themed event features live and silent auctions, raffles, door prizes, an open bar and food that includes alligator, duck, venison and shrimp. Tickets are $95 per person or $150 per couple. Nov. 10-13: Wahoo Smackdown VIII is out of the Bimini Big Game Club in the Bahamas. The total payout is $25,000 with a 25-boat minimum. Entry fee is $1,500 per boat for four anglers. The registration deadline is Oct. 27. To register, visit biggameclubbimini.com.
