Free Museum Day in Sacramento on Saturday offers a chance for visitors to sample new places to experience history, art, wildlife and culture. You can see vintage steam engines at the California State Railroad Museum, the one-time mansion of rail tycoon Leland Stanford, and handmade grass and reed baskets at the State Indian Museum next to Sutter’s Fort.

Go a little farther afield to explore the Maidu Museum in nearby Roseville, which features indoor displays about the Nisenan Maidu tribe and outdoor trails where you’ll find ancient petroglyphs and native plants..

In all, 25 museums in the state capital area will be free Saturday. Other participating sites include the Sacramento Children’s Museum and the California Automobile Museum.

Find more information and a list of all participating museums at Sacramento Area Museums.

Los Angeles and Orange County museums also will offer free admission on single days (Saturday or Sunday) or both days this weekend.
