CV Sheriff’s Station shut down after man brings in grenade

Share

The Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s station was closed briefly Sunday night after a man brought a World War II-era practice grenade to the lobby and it was later rendered safe.

The grenade was dropped off in a paper bag at 6:10 p.m. at the station’s front lobby in the 4500 block of Briggs Avenue by an 84-year-old man, who had collected it from a friend’s widow who wanted to safely dispose it, according to the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s officials.

Deputies directed the man to move and place the grenade outside in the station’s parking lot.

The parking lot and lobby were immediately closed while the sheriff’s bomb squad investigated the grenade, which had been stored inside the paper bag.

While the bomb squad rendered the grenade was safe, sheriff’s officials said old military artillery shouldn’t be handled due to the extreme hazard.

They urged anyone who finds similar devices to leave them alone and immediately notify local authorities, so they can investigate.
