Lemonade Pet Insurance plans and coverage

Lemonade offers a base plan that includes both accidents and illnesses, thus ensuring your pet has nose-to-tail coverage. This plan covers everything you would expect from a highly reviewed pet insurance company, like bloodwork, diagnostic testing, and emergency care. It also covers things some competitors don’t, like prescription medications and specialist care.

Lemonade accident and illness plan

  • Accidents like broken bones, swallowed objects or car accidents
  • Illnesses like upper respiratory infections, ear infections, vomiting or diarrhea
  • Hereditary and congenital conditions like hip dysplasia, hernias and eye disorders
  • Cancer treatment
  • Diabetes
  • Arthritis
  • Allergies
  • Treatment of parasites like fleas and heartworms
  • Blood tests and lab work
  • Diagnostic imaging like  X-rays, CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds
  • Surgery and hospitalization, including IV fluids and medical supplies
  • Emergency care
  • Specialist care
  • Prescription medications

The base plan doesn’t cover dental diseases and tooth extractions, which is something some competitors (like Pumpkin Pet Insurance or Fetch Pet Insurance) do include. If pet dental insurance is important to you, Lemonade does offer an add-on package that includes this coverage.

Lemonade Pet Insurance add-on packages

Once you purchase a base pet insurance policy from Lemonade, you can opt for add-ons to extend your pet insurance coverage and give you extra peace of mind.

These additional services can include things like physical therapy, exam fees for covered conditions, end-of-life care, dental illnesses and treatment for behavioral conditions.

For example, if your cat develops gum disease, a common dental illness, you may be able to use your Lemonade policy to cover the cost of treating it. You can pack any individual add-on, or mix and match up to all five if you choose. Each one comes at an additional cost to your base plan.

Lemonade Pet Insurance plan add-ons (you can select individually)

  • Dental illnesses including tooth extractions, root canals, gingivitis and periodontal disease

  • End of life services like euthanasia, cremation and remembrance items or memorials.

Lemonade Pet Insurance wellness plans

Lemonade tailors their preventative care plans to fit your pet based on their age, and offers options for kittens and puppies as well as adult cats and dogs.

Lemonade Pet Insurance exclusions

As with all other pet insurance providers, there are some things that are excluded from coverage.

What’s not covered

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Incidents that occur before the waiting period ends
  • Things not related to accidents and illnesses
  • Preventable conditions
  • Non-traditional therapies
  • Treatments that took place more than 180 days ago

We explain these exclusions in more detail below.

Pre-existing conditions

A pet insurance pre-existing condition is a health problem that your pet shows signs or symptoms of before the relevant waiting period expires. Lemonade Pet Insurance will not cover any expenses arising from such health issues. However, some illnesses that are considered curable may be covered after 12 months with no symptoms, but this is only available in some states. It’s best to check your policy details to see if you qualify.

Incidents that occur before the waiting period ends

If something happens after your policy start date but before the waiting period ends, Lemonade will not reimburse you for the expenses. We’ll cover more details about Lemonade waiting periods in the next section.

Bilateral conditions

A bilateral condition is anything that can affect both sides of your pet’s body. For example, if your dog has a problem in one ear, there’s a chance it could develop the same issue in its other ear.

Lemonade will not provide coverage if one side of your pet’s body shows signs of bilateral conditions before purchasing a policy. However, Lemonade will cover bilateral conditions if the first occurrence appears after your policy starts.

Lemonade’s base plan doesn’t cover routine vet visits or other services that aren’t related to a specific illness or injury. However, you can get more coverage for routine care for your pet by purchasing add-ons or a preventative care package.

Preventable conditions

Lemonade doesn’t cover bills related to conditions that you could have prevented. This includes conditions related to abuse, neglect and dog fighting.

Non-traditional therapies

Lemonade won’t typically cover non-traditional therapies like CBD or aromatherapy. However, if you purchase the physical therapy add-on, your pet may be eligible for some types of treatments like hydrotherapy or acupuncture for covered accidents or illnesses.

Treatments from more than 180 days ago

With Lemonade, you have 180 days to file a claim after treatment to be eligible for coverage. Be sure to check your specific policy, however, because some states have different requirements. For example, you must file a claim within 90 days of treatment if you live in Texas.

How much does Lemonade Pet Insurance cost?

The cost of pet insurance depends on the following factors:

1

Coverage details

Your deductible, annual coverage limit and co-insurance all have an impact on the cost of your pet insurance. Additionally, you’ll pay more for coverage if you purchase an add-on or enroll your pet in one of Lemonade’s preventive care packages.

2

Location

Insurance companies like Lemonade base their prices on many factors, including how much vets charge for their services. If you live in an area with a high cost of living, your vet may have to charge above-average prices to keep their practice running, increasing the cost of your pet insurance.

3

Pet age

As pets age, they may develop diabetes, cancer or other chronic diseases. Insurance companies account for the increased risk by charging more for older pets.

Does Lemonade offer any discounts?

Lemonade offers a 5% multi-pet discount if you enroll two or more pets. You may qualify for an additional discount if you bundle pet insurance with another type of policy offered by Lemonade, like car, home, renters, or life insurance. All bundled policies are managed through the same easy-to-use app.

Lemonade also offers a discount if you choose to pay annually as opposed to monthly.

Lemonade Pet Insurance coverage options

When you sign up for Lemonade insurance, you get to choose a deductible, reimbursement rate and annual coverage limit.

If you choose a high reimbursement, high maximum coverage, and low deductible, your monthly premium costs will be higher. If you’re looking for a cheap pet insurance plan, choosing a low reimbursement, low annual maximum, and high deductible will give you a lower monthly premium price.

Try out different combinations to find a plan with the right coverage to fit your budget.

These are Lemonade’s coverage options:

Deductible

This is how much you have to pay before you can use your pet insurance benefits. The lower your deductible, higher your monthly premium will be.

Lemonade gives you deductible options:

Reimbursement rate

When you file a claim, Lemonade reimburses you for a certain percentage of your expenses. This is also known as your co-insurance.

For example, if you have a covered vet bill for $100 and your policy has a 70% reimbursement rate, Lemonade would give you $70 back once your claim was approved.

Your monthly premium will be higher if you choose a higher percentage, and lower if you choose a lower reimbursement percentage.

You can choose a reimbursement rate of:

Annual coverage limit:

This is the maximum amount of money an insurance company will pay out in one year. The higher your annual limit, the more you pay for coverage.

Lemonade offers the following annual limit options:

Lemonade Pet Insurance waiting period and age restrictions

Lemonade has waiting periods and other restrictions you need to know about before you buy a policy.

Lemonade Pet Insurance waiting periods

A pet insurance waiting period is the amount of time that must pass after you enroll before you can use your benefits. Lemonade has a two-day waiting period for accidents, and 14-day waiting period for illnesses, and a six-month waiting period for cruciate ligament issues.

Lemonade Pet Insurance age restrictions

Although it’s important to insure your pet as early as possible, Lemonade doesn’t issue policies for pets under eight weeks old.
