Two RSF residents join UC San Diego Foundation board

Two Rancho Santa Fe residents, Brian M. Powers and Ann Reed, were among eights trustees who recently joined the UC San Diego Foundation Board of Trustees for the 2018-19 year. The eight new trustees bring diverse expertise as doctors, educators, lawyers and entrepreneurs. Yet they all share a common interest: propelling the bold experiments, lifesaving solutions and nontraditional learning opportunities at the University of California San Diego.

The UC San Diego Board of Trustees are unique ambassadors who dedicate their time and talents to supporting the university’s continued growth. The foundation is governed by 43 trustees who serve to connect the campus with the community. Comprised of local, regional, national and international leaders and alumni, the board helps inspire and encourage philanthropic investment in UC San Diego.

The foundation also has 37 esteemed trustee emeriti that continue with the board in an advisory capacity.Trustees play an integral role in fulfilling the Campaign for UC San Diego, a historic $2 billion fundraising campaign to transform the student experience, the campus and ultimately humanity itself.

Private gifts to the university are accepted, administered and invested by the Foundation, managed as endowments or funds available for current expenditure. As of June 30, 2018, the total assets managed by the UC San Diego Foundation were approximately $1 billion.

Khosla. “As community liaisons, trustees help build important relationships that translate into support for innovative programs and campus growth.”

The new UC San Diego Foundation trustees include seven elected trustees and one ex-officio trustee as the alumni president. Below is more information about the two trustees who are RSF residents:

Brian M. Powers, Chairman Emeritus of Hellman & Friedman, LLC.

Powers first joined Hellman & Friedman, a San Francisco-based private equity firm, in 1991-92. He returned in 1999, serving first as CEO and then as chairman until his retirement in 2014. From 1986-88 he served as managing director (CEO) of the Jardine Matheson Group in Hong Kong. From 1993-98 he served as CEO of both Consolidated Press Holdings and Publishing & Broadcasting Limited in Australia.

He earned a B.A. in economics from Yale University and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law.

Ann Reed, Philanthropist and Community Leader

Reed’s first connection to UC San Diego was through her children—all three earned degrees at the university. Formerly an accountant with Deloitee Haskins & Sells, Reed has led or participated in campaigns that have raised over $1 million for K-12 public schools. She and her husband Joel were also instrumental in supporting the launch of the Conrad Prebys Music Center and the Institute for Practical Ethics at UC San Diego. Reed earned a B.S. in accounting from Arizona State University.
