Carmel Valley resident a finalist in Spotlight Awards

Performing the character Tom from The Glass Menagerie, senior Nick Moseley of The Bishop’s School earned third place in the LA Music Center’s annual Spotlight Awards.

The Spotlight Awards highlight student performances in acting, ballet, classical instrumental, classical voice, jazz instrumental, non-classical dance and non-classical voice. In addition to the competition, “Spotlight is a scholarship and training program which encourages personal and artistic growth.” From an initial video audition submitted in the fall, through two more in-person auditions in the spring, the top two artists from each category are chosen perform in the Grand Finale in Disney Hall on June 8.

The Bishop’s School’s Performing Arts Teacher Courtney Flanagan explained, “This year, 300 students sent in audition tapes. Out of that 300, 60 were chosen for a live audition at the Music Center. We had six seniors make it to that stage.” They were Nick, CJ Delfino (Encinitas), Ben Li (Carmel Valley), Jiakai Chang (Rancho Peñasquitos), Noah Adaikkalam (Allied Gardens), and Faizan Jamil (Rancho Santa Fe).

She continued, “Sixteen were then selected for the final audition. Nick was in that group, for which he was awarded $300. All 16 were given a workshop at the Music Center; last Saturday, they auditioned again. Nick got the Honorable Mention; he missed going to Disney Hall, but he won $1,000.”

Meanwhile, Nick was also honing his Acting Workshop senior project, American Buffalo, a powerful play written by David Mamet. He directed and acted in the show alongside Ben Li and Noah Adaikkalam at Bishop’s Black Box Theater held April 18 and 19.
