Canyon Crest Academy students Estelle Qi, Emily Lin and Marjorie Leblanc are taking part in the Students of the Year Campaign, raising funds for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS).

The Students of the Year Campaign is a seven-week initiative in which nominated high school students participate in a fundraising competition to benefit LLS. The candidate who raises the most money at the end of the seven weeks is named the Student(s) of the Year. The campaign launched on Jan. 5 and will culminate with a Grand Finale Gala on Feb. 24 where the winner will be announced.

“It’s an honor to be a part of such an outstanding group of fellow students, but an even larger honor to be able to work for the patients, survivors and their families,” said Marjorie. “LLS’s work is changing the lives of 1.2 million Americans living with a blood cancer.”

The Students of the Year candidates in San Diego work to raise a collective total exceeding $150,000 in support of LLS’ mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. The Carmel Valley students’ personal goal is to raise $13,000.

Marjorie said not only is the campaign a great way to support LLS but it is also a great leadership opportunity.

“Students receive scholarships based on our fundraising and awareness efforts,” Marjorie said. “We are so excited to be able to make a difference in our community in this way. With the help of the people in our community, we’re one step closer to a cure for blood cancers.”
