TPHS student wins Student of the Year, raising over $44,000 for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

Torrey Pines High School senior Sophia LeRose was named the winner of the The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society San Diego’s Student of the Year campaign, bringing in $44,450.78 during the seven-week fundraising competition. In total, 14 student-led teams collectively raised almost $250,000.

The funds raised through LLS's Students of the Year campaign are used for continuing research of lifesaving therapies like targeted therapies and immunotherapies that are saving thousands of lives.

Sophia was honored at the Student of the Year gala on Feb. 24.

“It was such a rewarding experience to have raised so much money in honor of my grandfather, who recently passed away from leukemia,” Sophia said. “I would love to thank everyone in the community who supported me and my fundraising efforts through my Sweat for a Cure Cardio Boot Camp event, Cycle Bar event, and Chipotle and Crust restaurant fundraisers.”

Other local candidates in the competition included Marjorie LeBlanc, Emily Lin and Estelle Qi from Canyon Crest Academy; Team Knockout which included Mimi Mayer and Hannah Wang from Canyon Crest Academy; and Team Friends for a Cure which included Torrey Pines’ Joanne Wang.
