A 52-year-old woman who fell asleep under a semi-truck died after the driver, who didn’t realize she was there, moved the vehicle and ran her over Sunday, July 29, police said.

An employee of the Trader Joe’s on Garnet Avenue came upon the woman in an alley behind the store and called police about 1:20 p.m., police officer Sarah Foster said.

Police and paramedics arrived and tried to save the woman, but she succumbed to her injuries. She was not identified. Officers were investigating the incident as an accident.

DUI checkpoint nets 5 arrests, July 7

The San Diego Police Department Traffic Division conducted a DUI/Drivers License checkpoint between 10:55 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday, July 7 at 2700 Garnet Ave.

2,064 vehicles passed through checkpoint; 606 vehicles were screened; 11 drivers were evaluated; 5 DUI-alcohol suspects were arrested in or near the checkpoint; 1 person was arrested on additional criminal charges of possession of brass knuckles.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, other expenses that can exceed $10,000, not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Road safety day, July 17

San Diego Police Department conducted bicycle and pedestrian safety operations from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 17. Attention was directed toward drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in cross walks or any other dangerous violation. Additionally, enforcement was taken for observed violations when pedestrians crossed a street illegally or failed to yield to drivers who had the right of way.

Drivers must: Be prepared to stop when turning or entering a crosswalk where pedestrians are likely. Be cautious when backing up — pedestrians, especially young children, can move across your path. Share the road with bicyclists. California law mandates at least three feet of clearance when passing bike riders. Look for cyclists before opening a car door or pulling out from a parking space. Yield to cyclists at intersections and as directed by signs and signals. Be watchful for riders when making turns, either left or right.

Bicyclists must: Wear helmets every time they ride. Obey the same rules of the road as other vehicle operators, including obeying traffic signs, signals, and lane markings. When cycling in the street, ride in the same direction as traffic. Increase visibility to drivers by wearing fluorescent or brightly colored clothing during the day, and at dawn and dusk. To be noticed when riding at night, the law requires a front light and a red rear reflector.

Pedestrians must: Follow the rules of the road, cross at crosswalks or intersections, and obey signs and signals.Walk facing traffic and as far from traffic as possible if there is no sidewalk. Pay attention to traffic and do not text or talk on a cell phone. Make eye contact with drivers as they approach. Never assume a driver sees you. Wear bright clothing during the day and reflective materials (or use a flashlight) at night. Look left-right-left before crossing a street.
