Canyon Crest Academy’s boys varsity basketball team chalked up conference wins last week against La Costa Canyon 63-45 and San Dieguito Academy 65-56. With the victories, the Ravens finished 7-3 in Avocado West conference play, finishing second place behind Torrey Pines for the second consecutive year.

Tyler Elsom led the Ravens defensive effort to help CCA jump to a large early lead that they never relinquished against La Costa Canyon. MJ Metz and Elsom led offensively with 20 and 14 points respectively. Senior Aaron Acosta added 10.

The Ravens needed a strong fourth quarter rally to defeat a surging San Dieguito Academy squad. CCA trailed by six at the end of the third quarter, before Acosta and sophomore Frank Gelfman took control of the game with big plays down the stretch. Nineteen of Acosta’s game-high 22 points, came in the second half. Metz was tough in the key all night, scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Elsom and Gelfman added 10 each.

Canyon Crest earned the third seed in the division one playoffs. CCA hopes to best last year’s finish when they made it to the division 2 semi-finals before losing to Orange Glen.
