La Cañada officials seek to improve traffic

Local officials are considering ways to improve traffic conditions on Foothill Boulevard near the Town Center area, recently hearing the findings of a traffic operations study conducted to assess traffic volume, wait times at stop lights and accident occurrence.
The city’s Public Works and Traffic Commission requested a study be conducted last February and, on July 13, City Council approved a contract not to exceed $68,872, according to traffic engineer Erik Zandvliet.

Los Angeles design firm Kimley Horn and Associates was hired to assess conditions at the Foothill Boulevard and Angeles Crest Highway crossway. A consultant presented a list of possible measures to the Commission in a meeting last Wednesday, seeking public input, Zandvliet said.

A draft report and initial findings will be shared at commission and council meetings in April and May. Initial measures not requiring significant infrastructure changes are expected to be put into place sometime this summer.

Larger projects would be considered for inclusion in the capital improvements project list for fiscal year 2014-15. That list determines the city’s infrastructure needs and priorities for the coming year.
