Sports Roundup: La Cañada High girls’ cross-country team, Scoville triumph at Rio Hondo’s second meet

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

La Cañada in Rio Hondo League meet: The host Spartans received five top-nine finishes, including a winning mark of 18 minutes 33.58 seconds from Katharine Scoville, to win the league’s second meet on Thursday at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena.

La Cañada finished with 26 points on the three-mile dirt course. San Marino took second with 46 points, followed by South Pasadena (51) and Temple City (118).

Colleen Mispagel finished second with a time of 18:57.19 for the Spartans, who saw Kellie Rushing take sixth (20:04.79), Lynette Aslanian finish eighth (20:22.12) and Eleanor Marki take ninth (20:22.56).

“I was so pleased to see the way they finished up,” said La Cañada Coach Jenn Loya. “Katharine and Colleen were able to go 1-2 in the race.

“I thought the team ran an incredible race because they were able to stay together.”

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

La Cañada in Rio Hondo League meet: Things seem to be clicking for Spartan Ethan Angold nearing the midway point of the season. The senior provided an example Thursday during the second league meet of the season at Hahamongna Watershed Park in Pasadena.

Angold clocked a personal-best mark of 16 minutes 18.62 on the three-mile course to place second overall behind South Pasadena’s Cullen Irvine (16:11.72).

“I feel like I’m getting better and the team is getting better,” said Angold, who helped the Spartans take second with 44 points. “It’s great to get a PR on the course because I don’t get to run on this course that much.

“There are always new challenges ahead and we feel like we have a team that can come through.”

The Spartans had three top-six performances. Seve Rodriguez was fourth in 16:40.63 and Ethan Crane finished sixth in 16:48.28 for La Cañada. Ryan Van Slooten clocked 17:18.16 to place 13th for the Spartans, who received a 19th-place effort from Josh Frederich (17:50.31).

San Marino took first with 37 points. South Pasadena placed third with 46 points, followed by Temple City (89) and Monrovia (152).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

La Cañada 10, Temple City 8: The reigning league champion Spartans are the lone unbeaten team within the Rio Hondo League action picking up a road victory Thursday afternoon.

Senior Matt Olson led the Spartans (6-11, 3-0) with three goals, while Leo Neat added three scores for La Cañada.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy 3, Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 0: Kayla Lund collected 13 kills and 11 digs Thursday to help the host Tologs post a 25-15, 25-15, 25-19 Mission League victory. Sophia Coffey added 31 assists for the Tologs, who improved to 13-4, 3-1 in league.

Pasadena Poly 3, Flintridge Prep 0: Flintridge Prep suffered a 25-18, 25-21, 25-18 Prep League road defeat Thursday. Dani Motte finished with 10 kills for the Rebels, who are 3-7, 2-5 in league.
