Thursday Club awards seven scholarships

Seven local high school seniors were awarded La Cañada Thursday Club scholarships this month, it was announced by Sharon Combs, chairman of the organization’s scholarship committee.

The winners of the $1,000 scholarships were Tracey Andrews, Stephanie Beck, Sarah Borland, Robert Vaughn Fuelling, Alexis Lorenz, Gregory Lupica and Frances Pauken.

Recipient Gregory Lupica received an extra $500 scholarship from the Denise Greenawalt Scholarship. The late Denise Greenawalt was a Thursday Club member who never allowed obstacles to keep her from being both a successful career woman and a generous volunteer.

“It was hard to choose our winners, because all of the candidates were exceptional,” Combs said. She was joined on the selection committee by Kathy Leonard, Maureen Staley and Jean Chubb.

Tracey Andrews is president of the LCHS Marching Band and the Jazz Band and hopes to join the University of Washington Marching Band. She will major in business and minor in music. She participated in the 2013 Thursday Club Les Fleurettes program. Tracey is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta, a National Math Honors Society.

Stephanie Beck is a talented dancer who plans to attend Bucknell University. A senior at LCHS, she is captain of the pep squad. She was a Princess on the Miss La Cañada Flintridge court and enjoys assisting toddlers in their ballet class at Revolution Dance.

Sarah Borland, a senior at LCHS, plans to attend USC. She is president of the ASB and editor of the yearbook. She is captain of the varsity basketball team, which in 2013 received all-league honors. She is the founder of the Door of Hope chapter at her school.

Robert Vaughn Fuelling was the starting quarterback for the LCHS varsity football team. He was also the ASB commissioner and sports editor for the school newspaper. He has also played baseball and was an umpire for Youth Baseball. He plans to attend Texas Christian University. In 2007, he designed, built and stocked the Norris Cancer Center small library for patients.

Alexis Lorenz was captain of the LCHS pep squad and played AYSO soccer for eight years. She was the yearbook editor at her school and received her Gold, Silver and Bronze Girl Scout awards.

Gregory Lupica, a student at St. Francis High School, was the captain of the varsity basketball team. He plans to attend Notre Dame and has an interest in attending a medical school afterward. He completed his Eagle Scout project in March 2014. He has enjoyed being a counselor at Comfort Zone Camp.

Frances Pauken, who attends LCHS, plans to go enroll at Fresno State University. At her high school, she started a knitting class. She has decorated the Pasadena Rose Parade float and volunteers at Triathlon events.
