An active volunteer within the La Cañada Unified School District announced this week he is forming a campaign committee to seek a seat on the school board during the Nov. 3 election, when two seats will be open.

Brent Kuszyk, an eight-year resident of the city who almost immediately upon his arrival here became involved with numerous district committees, stated in a news release he is running “because I want to continue the tradition of excellence in our schools. The current Governing Board and its energetic superintendent have led the district to a level of achievement that I believe to be unmatched in the state of California.”

Kuszyk served a five-year stint on the LCUSD’s Parcel Tax Oversight Committee, participated in the recent successful Measure LC parcel tax effort and has been a four-year board member on the La Cañada Flintridge Educational Foundation that raises funds for the district.

A professor of music at Biola University in La Mirada, Kuszyk is classical musician performing and touring with groups including the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Pacific Symphony. He and his wife, Marion, have both contributed to the Music Docent program for their children’s classes either by leading or providing musical instrument demonstrations.

Kuszyk also participated in the recent launch of the La Cañada High School Alumni Assn. Committee and started the “High School and Beyond” event to assist parents of children in the middle school grades get acquainted with the secondary schools. He has also overseen the iRead Summer Reading Program at Palm Crest Elementary School. Outside of the schools, he is an elder in his church, has been an AYSO coach, girls softball coach and a leader in the Y-Tribes program.

The school board terms that will expire are those currently held by Ellen Multari, currently the school board’s vice president, and current board President Andrew Blumenfeld, who has said he will run for the state Assembly in 2016. The deadline to declare candidacy in the fall elections is 5 p.m. on Aug. 7.
